How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 70220, Class 50 on the BOL and match the actual pack to boxes or crates; note if shipping silex bricks, tiles, or preformed liners.
- Individually wrap flint/silica pieces with foam or corrugated pads, fill voids, and use edge protection—these are dense yet brittle components.
- For crates, add cleats and internal bracing, then band the crate to a pallet; mark Do Not Stack for tall sets, e.g., a 1,800 lb crated silex liner kit.
- Keep contents dry and dust-contained with a poly liner; label as Mineral Linings — Non-Haz and include a piece-count packing list for quick check-in.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 delivers predictable quoting and often lower LTL costs for dense stone/ceramic linings than higher-class items.
- Boxed or crated eligibility minimizes reclass risks, reducing rebills and damage claims on fragile wear parts.
- A single NMFC item streamlines TMS automation for repeat shipments to mills, mines, and ceramic plants, accelerating order-to-ship cycles.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, while robust packaging cuts breakage and downtime in operations.
