| NMFC | Description | Class |
|---|---|---|

| 70340.01 | In bales not machine pressed; or in bags having a density of less than 20 pounds per cubic foot, subject to Item 170 | 100 |
| 70340.02 | In machine pressed bales; or in bags having a density of 20 pounds or greater per cubic foot, subject to Item 170 | 55 |
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density before booking. Weigh the shipment and measure the palletized cube to calculate lb/ft³ (e.g., 500 lb on a 40x48x48 in pallet ≈ 9.4 pcf). Match the result to the 55–100 class tier per carrier rules.
- Choose packaging that controls lint and boosts density: compressed bales or heavy-duty, poly-lined bags inside cartons. Add stretch wrap and corner boards, and use anti-static liners to minimize dust.
- Unitize cleanly on pallets with no overhang. Strap or tape to prevent bulging, add a top sheet to contain fibers, and protect against moisture if transloading is expected.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Cotton flocks, NMFC 70340,” list packaging type, total weight, and calculated density. Note non-hazardous material to avoid hazmat screening delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower freight spend by increasing density through compression or smarter pack-out, potentially landing a lower class within the 55–100 range.
- Reduce reclass fees and reweigh charges with precise density notes and packaging descriptions that align with NMFC 70340.
- Fewer product losses and claims by containing lint and dust, keeping cotton flocks clean and sale-ready for textile and flocking operations.
- Simpler carrier acceptance and faster quotes thanks to a clear, non-hazardous designation and standardized density-based classification.
