How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm which sublisting applies and note the class (85 or 100) based on how the flocks are described in your paperwork—e.g., hair vs. wool or processed vs. mixed.
- Pack flocks in sturdy corrugated boxes with a poly liner to trap loose fibers; tape all seams and consider desiccant packs to control moisture during transit.
- Keep box weights manageable for dock handling (typically 40–50 lb per box) and palletize multiple boxes; shrink-wrap tightly and use corner boards to prevent bulging.
- On the BOL, state “Flocks—Hair or Wool, NMFC 70380,” include box count and total weight, and attach photos if fibers are very fine to preempt inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable class range (85–100) streamlines rating and quoting, reducing time to price LTL moves.
- Non-hazardous material avoids hazmat surcharges and specialized handling fees.
- Sealed, boxed packaging minimizes fiber shedding and contamination claims, improving delivery acceptance and lowering risk costs.
- Efficient palletization of compressible flocks increases units per skid, helping control freight spend with better space utilization.
