How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the exact item under this group before booking—e.g., ceramic tile in cartons, vinyl sheet in rolls, laminate planks in cartons, or wall panels on skids—and match it to the correct NMFC item number.
- Package by form factor: stack tile or panels flush on a 48x40 pallet with corner boards and a plywood top cap; for rolls, insert core plugs, lay horizontally with chocks, and band to the pallet to prevent telescoping.
- Document details on the BOL: material (tile, vinyl, laminate), packaging (cartons, rolls, pallets), piece count, and handling notes like Do Not Stack or Fragile edges; add photos at pickup to support claims.
- For brittle or heavy goods (stone tile, glass-faced panels), use foam interleave, edge protectors, and a crate or fully enclosed pallet; keep no overhang and ensure forklift entry on all sides.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduces reclass and inspection fees by steering shippers to the correct NMFC item within this group when class is not preset (Class N/A).
- Cuts damage costs on chip-prone tile and scuff-prone vinyl by aligning packaging to product geometry, lowering claim rates and reship expenses.
- Improves rate eligibility by keeping freight within standard LTL footprints and avoiding oversize fees—especially with properly banded rolls and tight pallet builds.
- Speeds quoting and tendering: standardized pack methods per SKU make BOLs clearer, shorten carrier handling time, and improve on-time performance to job sites.
