How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Document packaging on the BOL: note if plants are container-grown, balled-and-burlapped, bare root, or shipped on nursery racks or trellises.
- Stabilize root systems and moisture: secure pots, tie burlap on B&B root balls, add liners to catch drips, and use breathable wrap to protect foliage.
- Build freight-friendly units: palletize racks or trays on 48x40 pallets, strap securely, avoid overhang, and shield canopies with corner boards or netting.
- Plan timing and handling: ship early in the week, add Live Plants/Do Not Freeze or Overheat labels, request appointment delivery, and avoid weekend dwell.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NOI identification reduces reclass and reweigh disputes, lowering surprise carrier re-bills.
- Protected root balls and secured canopies cut transit damage, claims, and reshipment costs.
- Unitized, rack-ready loads speed dock turns and minimize accessorials like excessive handling or detention.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and can improve LTL rate shopping flexibility.
