How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the correct NMFC 71340 subclass for your flotation reagent; two subclasses typically map to Class 55 or 70 based on item form and how it’s boxed.
- Use sealed inner containers (bottles or bags) inside sturdy corrugated boxes with a liner or absorbent, then block and cushion to prevent movement and leaks.
- Note NMFC 71340 and the chosen subclass on the BOL, describe as “Flotation reagent, non-hazardous, boxed,” and include piece count and total weight for rating.
- Palletize boxed units on a 40×48 in. pallet, keep heavier boxes low, stretch-wrap and band, and mark arrows/“This Side Up” to reduce handling claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55–70 pricing can cut LTL costs compared with higher classes, improving landed cost for mining labs and concentrators.
- Non-hazardous status avoids HazMat surcharges and specialized paperwork, speeding pickup and reducing compliance overhead.
- Accurate subclass selection and clear BOL descriptions minimize reclass/reweigh fees and OS&D claims linked to leakage or poor packing.
- Standard boxed packaging streamlines quoting and contract negotiations, creating predictable rates across suppliers and test shipments.
