How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 71470 and Class 70 on the BOL, noting “molded lava plant pots, boxed” so carriers match the correct tariff line.
- Use double‑wall cartons with rim and base padding; heavy, porous lava can chip at edges. Example: add 2" foam around a 12" planter rim.
- Palletize cartons in a tight pattern, strap and stretch‑wrap, and add “Do Not Top Load” to avoid crush damage on heavier stone goods.
- Even though the class is fixed, capture actual dims and weight per carton or pallet to prevent capacity or cubic minimum charges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 70 rating reduces reclass fees and reweigh disputes for these boxed lava pots.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies paperwork across LTL carriers.
- Proper box and pallet protection cuts breakage on heavy stone planters, lowering claim ratios and replacement costs.
- Consolidating multiple boxes on a single pallet improves handling efficiency and can lower per‑unit freight rates.
