How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote as NMFC 71680, Class 50, and list packaging on the BOL (cloth or five-ply paper bags, boxes, or drums). Include piece counts and note palletized vs. floor-loaded.
- Palletize bags or boxes tightly with a stiff top sheet, corner boards, and stretch wrap. Prevent overhang on 48x40 pallets to avoid tears and product loss.
- If moisture control matters (e.g., acid-grade fluorspar), choose lined five-ply bags or sealed drums and add Keep Dry and This Side Up labels, plus a waterproof top cover.
- Example: a 2,200 lb pallet of 44 x 50-lb bags ships as Class 50; mark NMFC 71680 and Non-hazardous mineral to speed carrier acceptance and reduce inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 rating drives lower LTL charges on dense mineral loads, improving landed cost for metallurgical and chemical supply chains.
- Accurate NMFC 71680 identification minimizes reclass fees and billing disputes, protecting margins on repetitive shipments.
- Using approved bags, boxes, or drums reduces split-bag claims and cleanup delays, keeping turn-times and detention costs down.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options, enabling competitive rates and faster capacity sourcing.
