How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm density per Item 170: PCF = weight (lb) ÷ cubic feet. Example: 36×36×24 in (18 cu ft) at 720 lb = 40 pcf; select the NMFC 71780 subclass that matches that density.
  2. Package in sturdy boxes, wood crates, or Package 2299. Line containers to contain shreds and oil, protect sharp edges, and brace rolls or bales to stop punctures in transit.
  3. Sort and label by metal and backing: e.g., “Aluminum foil scrap, paper-backed.” Note if material is clean scrap vs. mixed wrappers to avoid reclassification.
  4. Palletize tightly with banding and corner boards, no overhang. Mark the BOL with gross weight, dimensions, and calculated density to support the chosen class.
