How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density per Item 170: PCF = weight (lb) ÷ cubic feet. Example: 36×36×24 in (18 cu ft) at 720 lb = 40 pcf; select the NMFC 71780 subclass that matches that density.
- Package in sturdy boxes, wood crates, or Package 2299. Line containers to contain shreds and oil, protect sharp edges, and brace rolls or bales to stop punctures in transit.
- Sort and label by metal and backing: e.g., “Aluminum foil scrap, paper-backed.” Note if material is clean scrap vs. mixed wrappers to avoid reclassification.
- Palletize tightly with banding and corner boards, no overhang. Mark the BOL with gross weight, dimensions, and calculated density to support the chosen class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-driven classes (up to 13 breaks) reward compact packing, lowering freight class and cutting LTL rates for foil scrap and wrappers.
- Using approved packaging (boxes, crates, Package 2299) reduces reweigh/reclass fees and helps prevent leakage or puncture claims.
- Clear material IDs—aluminum, lead, tin, or zinc, with or without backing—speed quotes and minimize inspection delays for non-hazardous recyclables.
- Accurate density documentation improves carrier acceptance and transit times, enabling predictable costs for recurring scrap and wrapper shipments.
