How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to the specimen: crate heavy matrix blocks and display pieces, use rigid boxes for small curated fossils. Expect class near 85 when fully crated and closer to 100 when boxed.
- Immobilize the fossil so it cannot shift. Use foam-in-place, carved foam cavities, plaster field jackets for fragile finds, and double-wall cartons or plywood caps to spread load.
- Palletize boxes or crates, strap and stretch-wrap, keep weight centered, and add corner posts or top caps. Mark Fragile/This Side Up and use shock or tip indicators when needed.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Fossils, non-hazardous, NMFC 76020,” include packaging type and piece count, attach photos of packing, and request liftgate or residential service if applicable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize freight spend by selecting protection that targets the lower end of Class 85–100 while still preventing breakage.
- Reduce damage risk and claims by immobilizing brittle specimens, preserving provenance and market value for museums, dealers, and collectors.
- Speed up quoting and scheduling with a clear NMFC reference and non-hazardous status, minimizing delays and accessorial surprises.
- Lower reclass and inspection fees by using standard LTL-friendly boxes or crates and precise BOL descriptions tailored to fossil shipments.
