How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 76360 on the BOL and describe as “Foundry Strainer Cores, sand, clay and talc combined, in boxes” to ensure the fixed Class 60 is applied.
- Pack cores snugly in corrugated boxes with partitions or molded inserts; line with poly to contain dust and use kraft paper or foam to cushion fragile surfaces.
- Keep moisture away—seal boxes, wrap the pallet, and mark Keep Dry; these sand/clay/talc cores are brittle and can degrade if wet.
- Palletize boxes with corner boards and light top protection; avoid heavy top-stacking and note Do Not Stack if boxes are light-duty.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 60—no density calculation, helping foundries quote fast and avoid unexpected reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous materials reduce carrier restrictions and paperwork, speeding up onboarding with new lanes and providers.
- Proper boxed packaging minimizes breakage and dust leaks, cutting claim risk and keeping casting lines supplied without delays.
- Clear NMFC labeling streamlines inspections and keeps accessorials down, improving net freight cost per core set.
