How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the correct subclass under NMFC 76640 and list it on the BOL; this item doesn’t use density breaks, so follow the NMFC notes for class selection.
- Pack frames in snug cartons with corner protectors and cardboard dividers so mesh and frame edges don’t rub; example: nest 6 aluminum frames with corrugated pads between each.
- For multiple cartons, stand them upright on a pallet, use straps and stretch wrap, and add a top cap to prevent bowing or edge crush during LTL handling.
- Label cartons “Fragile Edges” and “Do Not Crush,” and avoid stacking heavy inks or tools on top during pickup and cross-dock consolidation.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable class range (100–200) streamlines quoting and reduces reclass fees for print shops and equipment distributors.
- Proper packaging sharply lowers mesh damage and claim costs, cutting rework and replacement delays on press setups.
- Clear NMFC identification accelerates carrier tendering and minimizes exceptions, improving on-time performance.
- Non-hazardous freight broadens carrier options and helps maintain competitive LTL rates without hazmat surcharges.
