How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the freight as “Frames, sign, sheet metal, SU” on the BOL and reference NMFC 76665; SU indicates the frames ship set up rather than knocked down.
- Target the lower class by fully crating or skidding: add plywood face sheets, foam wrap, edge guards, and banding. Example: A-frame rack on a 48×40 pallet with cross-bracing and V-boards.
- Protect thin aluminum or steel members from bending; ship upright on an A-frame or blocked vertical posts so no piece overhangs the pallet. Mark Do Not Stack if needed.
- Photograph packaging and note finish sensitivity (painted, powder coated) for claims. Include piece count and dimensions on labels to streamline cross-dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right-size packaging can shift rating toward the lower end of Class 100–200, reducing linehaul costs and minimizing reclass fees.
- Durable crating and edge protection cut OS&D incidents on long hauls, preserving finish quality on painted or powder-coated frames.
- Clear SU designation and consistent NMFC usage speed up carrier audits, improving quote accuracy and preventing invoice surprises.
- Upright A-frame loading allows higher trailer utilization and safer stacking adjacent to flat goods, improving consolidation and transit reliability.
