How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use produce-rated boxes or sturdy crates; baskets are acceptable only with slatted or solid covers. Example: 25–30 lb plum cartons on a 48x40 GMA pallet.
- Palletize for airflow and protection: cross-stack layers, add corner boards, and use breathable stretch wrap. Apply a ventilated top sheet and mark Perishable/This Side Up.
- Book as NMFC 77540 at Class 100. Even with a fixed class, include accurate total weight and pallet dimensions for LTL rating and space planning; request temp control if required.
- Minimize pressure on soft fruit: set top-load only or no double stack when ripeness warrants. Schedule pickups to avoid weekend holds and reduce spoilage risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies quoting and prevents density reclass disputes, helping invoices match estimates.
- Packaging compliance (boxes/crates and covered baskets) speeds dock inspections and reduces accessorial delays.
- Ventilation and gentle stacking cut bruising and claim rates, protecting margins on high-shrink stone fruit.
- Predictable classification supports multi-grower consolidations and reliable LTL routing during peak harvest.
