How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Cantaloupes/Muskmelons, fresh” and note NMFC 77700, Class 85 on the BOL. Mark the terms as Prepaid to align with the item language.
- Use ventilated boxes or wood/plastic crates with solid or slatted covers to protect rind while allowing airflow. Light stretch wrap only; avoid sealing airflow.
- Palletize on 48x40 GMA pallets with no overhang. Strap or corner-board stacks, add a top cap, and label “Top Load Only” if cartons are soft or ripened.
- Plan early-day pickups and temperature-controlled LTL when needed. Keep pallet weights moderate (≤1,500 lb) for safer handling and fewer damage claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 means predictable rating without density disputes, cutting reclass fees and surprise invoice adjustments.
- Prepaid terms reduce delivery-side accessorial disagreements and speed receiver processing at produce docks.
- Correct boxing/crating and covered tops lower bruise rates, improving shelf life and reducing OS&D claim exposure.
- Clear NMFC mapping (77700) streamlines audits and tendering, saving admin time and accelerating quote-to-booking cycles.
