How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as Celery Roots, NMFC 77740, Class 92.5 on the BOL and choose boxes or crates with slatted or solid covers to match the tariff wording.
- Use vented produce boxes or sturdy crates, line with food-grade pads, and brace each layer. Example: 40 lb cartons, 60 per 48x40 pallet with top caps.
- Book refrigerated LTL around 32–36°F with high humidity, avoid ethylene producers, and add Do Not Top Load labels to limit bruising.
- Strap and wrap with minimal stretch to keep airflow, keep pallet height under 72 inches for LTL, and request inside delivery only when cold chain is available.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- A fixed Class 92.5 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass fees for heavy crates or dense packs.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options in produce lanes.
- Standard boxes or crates fit common 48x40 pallets, improving cube and lowering damage claims.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds claims resolution and helps lock in seasonal contract rates.
