How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select sturdy, vented produce boxes or rigid field crates; if using boxes, add corner boards and tie layers so roots don’t bruise under top-load pressure.
- Palletize on 40x48 pallets with a cross-stack pattern that leaves airflow channels; keep total height near 48 inches to limit compression.
- Note temperature sensitivity: avoid chilling below 50°F; request Protect-From-Freezing or temperature control in cold corridors to prevent damage.
- On the BOL, list “Dasheens (Malangas), Fresh” and Class 60 under NMFC 77860; include piece count per pallet and request limited stack if packaging is light.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 60 rating helps secure lower base rates versus higher-class food items, reducing per-pound costs on LTL lanes.
- Commodity-based classification (no density needed) speeds quoting and minimizes re-rate disputes, shortening the time from tender to pickup.
- Standard boxes/crates stack efficiently, improving trailer cube and enabling more cases per pallet—better cost per case delivered.
- Eligibility for produce-focused lanes and consolidations improves schedule reliability from farms and markets, cutting spoilage and claims.
