How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the exact NMFC on your BOL: “Lemons, fresh, in boxes or crates – NMFC 77980 – Class 85.” This speeds rating and prevents reclass delays.
- Use vented, food‑grade boxes or rigid wooden/plastic crates; keep headspace to avoid crushing. Strap and stretch‑wrap to pallets while preserving airflow.
- Request temperature‑controlled LTL if needed and share the shipper’s citrus setpoint and airflow needs. Avoid freezing temps and long dwell times at terminals.
- Do not co-load with high ethylene producers (bananas, tomatoes). Note citrus sensitivity and request segregation when tendering to produce carriers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 with no density breakpoints minimizes quote variance and surprise reclass fees.
- Lower damage and shrink: sturdy boxes/crates and proper airflow reduce pressure bruising and claim exposure on fresh citrus.
- Faster tendering: clear NMFC 77980 labeling streamlines carrier acceptance and reduces exceptions at pickup.
- Broader carrier access: non-hazardous food cargo fits standard produce networks, improving capacity during peak seasons.
