How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. On the BOL, state “Fresh citrus (oranges/grapefruit/tangerines), boxed/crated — NMFC 78080, Class 85,” and include piece count and pallet count to avoid reclass.
  2. Use sturdy, vented produce cartons or wood/plastic crates on 40x48 pallets. Add corner boards and a top cap so nothing heavy rides on the fruit.
  3. Maintain airflow: avoid over-tight stretch wrap, leave chimney gaps, and stack labels facing out. Target 45–55°F transit temp depending on variety; request Protect From Freezing in winter lanes.
  4. Plan pickups early week to limit weekend dwell. Choose food-grade carriers or reefer LTL when lanes are long or temperatures swing.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating and quoting, giving predictable LTL costs for seasonal citrus programs.
  • Non-hazmat status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering in peak harvest windows.
  • Packaging in standard boxes or crates aligns with carrier handling rules, reducing damages and claim risk.
  • Clear NMFC alignment (78080) lowers reclass fees and minimizes accessorial surprises, protecting tight produce margins.
