78240.00 Quinces, prepaid, in boxes, crates or drums, in baskets with slatted or solid covers or in standard bushel baskets, see Note, item 77522 85

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Mark the BOL as Prepaid and describe the pack (e.g., “fresh quinces, 1-bushel baskets, slatted covers”) to match the NMFC language and avoid re-bills.
  2. Use sturdy boxes or wooden/plastic crates; for baskets, secure slatted or solid covers and cross-tie. Add corner boards and a top cap to prevent bruising under LTL compression.
  3. Palletize on 40x48 pallets, cross-stack for airflow, keep height around 48–60 inches, and leave vent gaps. Strap twice per pallet and use breathable stretch wrap with vent holes.
  4. Pre-cool to 32–40°F (0–4°C) and request temp-controlled service when available. Avoid liners that trap moisture; add “Do Not Freeze” and count/grade on packing lists.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 85 rating simplifies quoting and budgeting, cutting time spent validating produce density or special factors.
  • Prepaid designation reduces billing disputes and carrier re-rates, protecting margins on seasonal orchard-to-retail moves.
  • Packaging aligned with the item (boxes, crates, baskets with covers) lowers damage risk and reclassification fees, improving claim ratios.
  • Standardized handling enables multi-stop LTL consolidation of fresh produce, boosting trailer utilization and stabilizing freight rates during peak harvest.
