How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL as Prepaid and describe the pack (e.g., “fresh quinces, 1-bushel baskets, slatted covers”) to match the NMFC language and avoid re-bills.
- Use sturdy boxes or wooden/plastic crates; for baskets, secure slatted or solid covers and cross-tie. Add corner boards and a top cap to prevent bruising under LTL compression.
- Palletize on 40x48 pallets, cross-stack for airflow, keep height around 48–60 inches, and leave vent gaps. Strap twice per pallet and use breathable stretch wrap with vent holes.
- Pre-cool to 32–40°F (0–4°C) and request temp-controlled service when available. Avoid liners that trap moisture; add “Do Not Freeze” and count/grade on packing lists.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 85 rating simplifies quoting and budgeting, cutting time spent validating produce density or special factors.
- Prepaid designation reduces billing disputes and carrier re-rates, protecting margins on seasonal orchard-to-retail moves.
- Packaging aligned with the item (boxes, crates, baskets with covers) lowers damage risk and reclassification fees, improving claim ratios.
- Standardized handling enables multi-stop LTL consolidation of fresh produce, boosting trailer utilization and stabilizing freight rates during peak harvest.
