How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print the BOL exactly: “NMFC 78320 — Watermelons, Class 77.5, prepaid; packed in boxes/crates with solid or slatted covers.” Clear notes deter terminal reclass.
- Use rigid produce boxes or crates with tight solid or slatted lids; add pads at contact points to avoid rind bruising. Do not overfill or leave lids proud.
- Palletize on 40x48 with column stacking and zero overhang; align vent holes, add a top cap, and secure with two straps or stretch-wrap. Mark Do Not Top-Load.
- Hold pulp temps near 55°F with 85–90% RH; avoid chilling below 50°F. For mixed-produce LTL, set reefer to protect the warmest commodity.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
