How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 78790, Class 85 on the BOL and specify packaging as “boxed” or “crated” to match the rule; this class is not density-based.
- For birdbaths shipped with bowls separate from bases, label both cartons as a set and unitize them on one pallet with stretch wrap and corner protectors so they stay together.
- Crate tall pedestals and fountain sections with blocking or an A‑frame inside the crate; band over wide edge protectors to prevent strap bite on stone surfaces.
- Ship KD stone tables with tops vertical and cushioned, hardware bagged, and edges foam‑guarded; mark center of gravity and This Side Up, request liftgate or appointment if delivering to garden centers or parks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating reduces reclass fees and disputes, improving quote accuracy for heavy decorative stone goods.
- Single NMFC item covers mixed SKUs—benches, planters, urns, KD tables—simplifying BOLs and streamlining warehouse picking.
- Proper boxing/crating dramatically lowers chip and crack claims, protecting margins and supplier scorecard performance.
- Consistent packaging in crates or strong boxes enables standard LTL handling, broadening carrier options and stabilizing transit times.
