How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match your SKU to the group notes 79022–79026 by identifying whether items ship assembled or knocked-down and whether they are parts or complete furniture.
- Document dominant materials (wood, metal, laminate, upholstery) and flag fragile elements like glass tops or stone inserts to choose the right packaging path.
- Package to fit handling: flat-packed panels in double-wall cartons on a pallet; irregular frames foam-wrapped and crated; band and stretch-wrap to prevent shift.
- Quote and tender by handling unit: list count of pallets/crates, exact dimensions and weight per unit, stackability, and orientation markings on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Cuts reclass bills and inspection delays by signaling the correct furniture family and pointing carriers to the applicable note items.
- Simplifies mixed FF&E moves (hospitality, office fit-outs) by grouping finished pieces and parts under one consistent commodity description.
- Reduces damage claims through packaging aligned to furniture geometry and materials, improving delivery condition and customer satisfaction.
- Speeds pricing and routing decisions for LTL by standardizing how furniture SKUs are described, packaged, and measured across product lines.
