How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC item 79550 and Class 300 on the BOL, and note “Packages 5F or 10F” to prevent reclass and inspection delays.
- For mattresses/box springs, use 5F/10F-compliant corrugated cartons or fully enclosed protective wrap with corner boards; strap to a skid with no overhang and mark top-load only.
- For waterbeds, drain completely, cap valves, fold the bladder, and cushion with foam before boxing to a 10F standard; never ship filled, and label orientation clearly.
- Measure and weigh each handling unit even though class is fixed; plan for residential or limited-access delivery and add do-not-stack cones when required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 300 eliminates density disputes and speeds quoting and tendering.
- Lower claims: 5F/10F packaging curbs tears, punctures, and moisture damage, reducing replacements and admin time.
- Fewer fees: correct NMFC and packaging notes on the BOL help avoid reclass charges, inspections, and delays.
- Operational savings: consolidate mattress and box spring on one skid and use mattress-savvy carriers to cut handling and accessorials.
