How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Fit plastic tip guards over every tine; if unavailable, wrap heavy corrugate and stretch film. Alternate fork heads to nest and create a flat top deck.
- Bundle handles in groups of 4–6 with poly-strap and edge protectors, then band bundles to a pallet. Keep all tines inside the pallet footprint to avoid puncture damage.
- Label bundles or cartons “Metal‑Tined Hand Forks — Sharp Points” and note piece counts. Add photos or a packing diagram to the BOL to guide safe staging.
- For long‑handle models, use 96‑inch pallets or a two‑pallet pattern to prevent overhang; avoid parcel when length exceeds 48 inches to reduce damage risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Point protection and nesting materially reduce OS&D claims, lowering rewrap fees and chargebacks.
- Clear NMFC reference (8120) limits inspection delays and surprise reclass penalties during LTL moves.
- Compact bundling decreases cubic footprint, improving cost per unit and enabling tighter truckload consolidation.
- Non‑hazardous designation widens carrier options and supports faster, more consistent transit times.
