How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify on the BOL as wheeled plows and reference NMFC 8410; lock or chock wheels, cap sharp edges, and secure loose hardware in a sealed bag.
- Remove detachable handles or blades where possible, bundle them, and strap the plow to a pallet through the frame (not through spokes) to prevent movement.
- Choose packaging by trip length and handling: wood crate for single units, or a reusable steel rack for multi-plow dealer shipments to protect wheels and controls.
- Measure the full footprint including handles and wheel overhang, photograph the packed unit, and keep weights handy to support carrier inspections or class reviews.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous commodity reduces compliance steps and avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Clear NMFC identification and proper packaging help prevent reclass fees and surprise rate adjustments when class is listed as N/A.
- Consolidating multiple plows into one handling unit lowers pickup time, minimizes accessorials, and can improve LTL pricing.
- Durable crates or racks cut transit damage and warranty claims for farm suppliers, co-ops, and garden equipment dealers.
