How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Drain any water or sand ballast first, cap openings, and remove tow or hand handles if detachable to prevent protrusions during LTL handling.
- If palletizing, cradle the cylinder with chocks or V-blocks and band it to the skid so it cannot roll; add edge protectors over bands.
- Shipping loose? Use blocking and bracing against bulkheads or sidewalls, mark Do Not Roll on all sides, and position axles away from traffic paths.
- On the BOL list: “Rollers, garden or lawn, NMFC 8490, Class 70,” include piece count, packaging type (loose or packaged), and note material (steel or poly).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quotes and avoids density disputes, reducing the risk of reclass fees for landscaping suppliers and rental yards.
- Allowance for loose or packaged shipping can lower prep costs on bulk moves while still keeping handling clear for carriers.
- Proper blocking and cradling minimizes drum dents and bent axles, cutting claim exposure and keeping seasonal inventory sale‑ready.
- Clear NMFC labeling speeds terminal processing and can improve transit reliability during peak lawn-and-garden seasons.
