How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Garden Hand Tool Sets, boxed — NMFC 8535, Class 77.5” to avoid density questions and reclass fees.
- Carton-in-box pack: nest trowels and orient fork tines inward, use corrugated dividers or sleeves over sharp points, and tape seams with 3-inch tape.
- Palletize boxes flat; keep forks and cultivator tines away from edges, add cornerboards, strap twice in each direction, then stretch wrap to the pallet footprint with no overhang.
- Document set count and actual box weight; mark cartons “This Side Up” if dividers are directional and apply non-haz labels for smooth carrier handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 77.5 removes density swings common with mixed metal/wood tools, improving quote accuracy.
- Lower claim risk: boxed-with-carton packing shields sharp points, reducing punctures, OS&D, and costly reshipments.
- Operational efficiency: ship as complete sets under one NMFC item to simplify picking, BOL lines, and receiving at destination.
- Carrier friendly: non-hazardous, stackable boxes speed dock turns and improve transit reliability, which helps secure better LTL rates over time.
