Notes
Note 85891: NOTE-Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 2, Division 2.1, Flammable Gas, as defined in 49 CFR 173.115 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 85890 and Class 125 on the BOL, declare hazardous materials, and include a 24‑hour emergency contact plus the specific gas or mixture name.
- Package in steel cylinders with valve protection caps, or place approved containers inside sturdy boxes or crates with blocking/bracing so units stay upright and cannot roll.
- Apply required hazmat markings and labels to the cylinder or the outer box/crate where applicable, and attach the SDS and shipping papers for driver review at pickup.
- Choose hazmat‑authorized LTL carriers and note any accessorials (liftgate for crated sets, limited access). Class is fixed—no density calculation needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 delivers predictable rating and faster quoting without density breaks or reweigh disputes.
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclassification fees, prevents carrier refusals, and keeps hazmat surcharges transparent.
- Flexible packaging options (cylinders or boxed/crated containers) let you optimize materials, reuse dunnage, and minimize damages.
- Stronger compliance and documentation lower OS&D risk, protect brand reputation, and improve on‑time performance for sensitive gas shipments.
