How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density from the outer box size and actual weight, including foam and corner guards. Example: 60x4x40 in box at 55 lb ≈ 9.9 PCF; use the NMFC 86320 density table to set the class.
- Use double‑wall or triple‑wall cartons with internal bracing so hinges and latches cannot pierce the box. Add edge protectors along rails to prevent crush damage in LTL cross‑docks.
- Describe the freight on the BOL as “Gates, doorway/hallway/porch/stairway, NOI, in boxes — NMFC 86320, Item 170” and list the calculated PCF. This helps carriers confirm the density‑based class on tender.
- If shipping multiple boxed gates, place cartons on a pallet with no overhang, band and shrink‑wrap, and mark Do Not Stack if internal bracing cannot support top load.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate PCF often lowers the class tier, cutting LTL rates versus using a conservative fixed class.
- Item 170‑compliant boxing and bracing reduce concealed damage and the cost of returns or rework.
- Clear NMFC 86320 labeling speeds inspections and minimizes reclass fees, rebills, and delivery delays.
- Right‑sizing cartons to reduce empty space decreases cube, enabling more cartons per pallet and better linehaul pricing.
