How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging by build and finish: crate assembled wood or antique stands; use double‑wall boxes with foam for knock‑down metal frames.
- Prevent racking and punctures by removing poles or gimbals, bagging hardware, wrapping legs, and blocking inside the box or crate.
- Palletize with no overhang, band and stretch‑wrap, add corner protectors, and mark This Side Up to protect lacquered or painted surfaces.
- Document materials (wood, metal, plastic), piece count, and photos on the BOL to support accurate class selection within 85–200.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right classing within 85–200 avoids reclass fees and unexpected rate increases.
- Crating delicate, display‑grade stands reduces transit damage and costly returns.
- Knock‑down boxing trims cubic size, improving LTL rates and handling efficiency.
- Non‑hazmat commodity speeds carrier acceptance and simplifies booking and scheduling.
