How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy cartons for spooled or coiled trim; add edge guards and dividers. If shipping loose rolls, choose a small crate to prevent crushing and kinks.
- Keep product clean and dry: line cartons with poly bags, cap spool cores, and avoid packing with tack strips or glues that can mark the fabric cover.
- Palletize for LTL: stack cartons evenly, stretch-wrap, add a top-sheet, and label Upholstery Trim — NMFC 86400 — Class 100 on boxes and the BOL.
- Declare Class 100 (no density required). Include piece counts by spool/roll and note material type (textile, vinyl, blend) to speed inspections and delivery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 100, reducing reclass disputes and enabling faster, cleaner quotes for LTL shipments.
- Packaging flexibility—boxes or crates—cuts damage risk on decorative piping, lowering claims and returns for furniture, marine, and auto trim suppliers.
- Efficient consolidation: combine many small spools into master cartons for better cube utilization and fewer minimum charge shipments.
- Non-hazardous classification avoids hazmat fees and special handling, streamlining pickups, linehaul options, and final-mile scheduling.
