How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item meets the 120 united inches limit and is packed in boxes, crates, or Package 1180. Bent and flat aircraft transparencies both qualify under this item.
- Build rigid packaging that prevents flex and edge impact: use corner blocking, foam suspension, and interleaving film to protect coated or polished glass surfaces.
- List the dimensions and the calculated united inches on the BOL, along with the packaging type (box, crate, or Package 1180) and the fixed Class 85 designation.
- Mark orientation and handling: use Glass/Do Not Stack labels, add tip-and-tell or shock indicators, and request carrier handling for fragile, curved aircraft panels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk, keeping aircraft glass shipments priced consistently across LTL carriers.
- Dimension-based classification removes density disputes, helping avoid surprise adjustments and speeding freight audits for MROs and OEMs.
- Using approved boxes, crates, or Package 1180 lowers damage rates, protecting high-value transparencies and reducing claim costs.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and transit planning, enabling faster tendering and fewer accessorial complications.
