How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use heavy-duty, double-wall corrugated boxes (gaylords) with liners; palletize, cap the top, and band tightly to contain shards and dust.
  2. Spread weight evenly in each box and on pallets; target 2,000–2,500 lb per skid where carrier limits allow, and label “Glass Scrap — Cullet.”
  3. Add slip sheets or interior padding to resist abrasion; stretch-wrap and cross-band to prevent bulging or blowouts during LTL handling.
  4. Keep away from food or pharma freight; note sharp contents on paperwork even though it’s non-hazardous to get proper trailer placement.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 50 pricing lowers cost per hundredweight for dense cullet, enabling more tons per pallet and better cost per mile.
  • Simple, non-density NMFC entry speeds quoting and reduces reclass exposure; consistent boxed packaging minimizes inspection delays.
  • Rugged boxed loads cut claim risk versus loose scrap, and reusable bulk boxes with liners reduce dunnage and packaging spend.
  • Clear cullet labeling fits recycling backhaul lanes, unlocking sharper LTL spot rates with regional carriers and consolidators.
