How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 86650 and note the exact package type (bags, boxes, drums, or Package 2453). State “non-hazmat” and include total count and pallet qty.
- Use sift‑proof packaging: multiwall bags with poly liners, lined boxes (Gaylords), or fiber drums. Add desiccants and seal seams to keep fine powder dry.
- Palletize tightly: interlock 50 lb bags on 40×48 pallets, add corner boards, top sheets, and 70+ gauge stretch wrap. For boxes/drums, band to pallets for stability.
- Control dust and protect labels. Request indoor pickup/delivery where possible, and add “Do Not Top Load” for bagged product to prevent burst or compaction.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low Class 55 rating keeps LTL costs down versus higher-class mineral powders.
- Simple, non-density rating removes reclass disputes and streamlines instant quoting.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and extra paperwork, accelerating transit.
- Flexible packaging (bags, boxes, drums) improves cube utilization and reduces damage claims.
