How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package in a rigid wood crate or double-wall box with internal bracing; keep sheets upright, add edge guards, and interleave foam so aluminum strips don’t imprint or scratch glass.
- Declare NMFC 86840 at Class 70 on the BOL; include piece count, outer dimensions, and exact weight even though class isn’t density-based.
- Label clearly: “Glass – Keep Upright – Do Not Stack.” Use soft straps around the crate, block and brace to the trailer wall, and avoid direct strap contact with the glass faces.
- Keep dry and temperature stable to limit differential expansion between glass and aluminum; use moisture barrier wrap and desiccant for longer transits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 70 gives predictable LTL pricing and minimizes reclass or rebill risk for glass with metal overlay.
- Boxed/crated requirement aligns with carrier rules, reducing damage claims and downtime tied to replacements.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines routing and paperwork, cutting accessorial exposure and accelerating transit.
- Clear NMFC alignment speeds quoting and procurement decisions, improving bid accuracy and freight budgeting.
