How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 87100 and Class 85 on the BOL, and itemize counts by type (flattening stones, floats, rings, pots) with sizes such as ring diameters.
  2. Use heavy wood crates for stones and clay pots; block, brace, and band to a 48x40 pallet with no overhang. For small rings/floats, double-wall boxes with dividers work well.
  3. Cushion contact points with foam or felt. Fill voids in boxes or drums to stop chipping, and label Fragile/Do Not Stack to prevent top-load damage.
  4. Keep moisture off kiln-fired clay parts. Wrap and stretch-film crates or boxes; add corner protectors and pallet caps to stabilize tall stacks.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 means no density calculation—faster quoting and fewer reclass fees for mixed clay refractories.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier selection for LTL lanes.
  • Crating and nesting reduce breakage risk, lowering claim costs and improving on-time project installs at glassworks.
  • Packaging flexibility (boxes, crates, skids) enables consolidation of rings, floats, and pots on one pallet, driving better freight rates per piece.
