How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 87650, Class 70 on the BOL and note packaging type (boxes or crates). If a syringe is included, state “one hydrometer syringe per package.”
- Use cell dividers or molded foam/pulp to isolate each glass jar. Sleeve the syringe in a rigid tube or blister, then secure within the same package with void fill.
- Palletize on 4-way pallets with corner boards, stretch wrap, and a top sheet. Keep jars upright, mark “Glass—This Side Up,” and avoid top-stacking during LTL transfer.
- Separate from wet batteries to prevent hazmat confusion. For lab samples or restorations, choose double-wall boxes or light wood crates to reduce breakage on cross-docks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density calculations, enabling faster rating, quoting, and routing decisions.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and specialized paperwork, reducing total landed cost.
- Crating or upgraded inner packs cut damage claims—often offsetting materials cost through fewer OS&D incidents.
- Clear NMFC alignment reduces reclass/inspection risks, keeping battery makers, labs, and refurbishers on predictable freight budgets.
