How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the scope: these are single-layer, cut-to-shape glass pieces for goggles, sunglasses, helmets, or body shields—not optically ground lenses. If ground for vision correction, use a different NMFC.
- Pack in sturdy boxes with interleaving sheets, edge guards, and foam or corrugated dividers. Example: each visor blank wrapped in film, separated by chipboard, then cushioned in a double-wall carton.
- Palletize cartons on the top layer only, add corner boards, and stretch-wrap tightly. Mark Do Not Stack and Glass—Handle With Care to reduce handling stress and claims.
- List the item clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 88080, Glass, single layer, cut to shape, in boxes — Class 85.” Include piece count and carton count for clean audits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Class 85 with boxed packaging streamlines quoting and reduces reclass risk for sunglass makers, helmet OEMs, and PPE suppliers.
- Lower accessorial exposure: non-hazardous and standard cartonized freight avoids hazmat fees and special handling surcharges, improving landed cost.
- Damage mitigation: correct inner packs and pallet tops-only placement cut breakage and claim ratios, keeping schedules on track and premiums stable.
- Faster operations: a single, non-density-based class simplifies TMS setup, speeds rate shopping for LTL, and shortens training for shipping teams.
