Notes
Note 88161: NOTE-Unless otherwise provided in individual participating carriers' tariffs, glassware moving under the provisions of item 88160 shall only be accepted subject to a maximum liability of $19.00 per pound. If shipper fails to declare a value, or declares a value in excess of $19.00 per pound, shipment will not be accepted, but if the shipment is inadvertently accepted, it will be considered as being released to a value not exceeding $19.00 per pound and the shipment will move subject to such limitation of liability. In no instance will carriers' liability exceed the actual value of the glassware lost or damaged.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify packaging matches the rule: use sturdy boxes or Package 213 cartons with partitions, corner guards, and cushioning to protect rims and stems.
- Determine pounds per cubic foot for rating. Use carton cube from specs or measure; Example: 18x14x14 in at 28 lb ≈ 2.04 cu ft, density ≈ 13.7 pcf.
- Declare the released value on the BOL: “Value released not exceeding $19.00 per pound,” and describe as Glassware, NOI, boxed or Package 213.
- Palletize carefully: keep zero overhang, align cartons upright, add top cap and stretch wrap, and note This Side Up for fragile pieces with trim.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize density with right-size cartons and partitions to reach a lower density-based class and cut LTL costs without sacrificing protection.
- Using approved Package 213 and robust boxing reduces damage claims and retailer chargebacks for drinkware, barware, and decorative glass.
- Clear BOL details (density, packaging, released value) prevent reclass and reweigh fees, speeding pickups and reducing surprise invoices.
- Accurate classification improves quote accuracy and supports better carrier negotiations for seasonal or recurring glassware shipments.
