How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State “Microscope slides/cover glasses, boxed” on the BOL with NMFC 88535, include piece count, and add clear “GLASS—FRAGILE” handling notes.
- Use rigid inner sleeves or partitioned trays for slides, then double-box with at least 32 ECT corrugate and void fill to prevent rattle and edge chipping.
- When palletizing, keep cartons fully on deck with no overhang; add corner boards, stretch wrap, and a top cap. Mark “Do Not Stack” if cartons aren’t crush-rated.
- For university or hospital labs, book delivery appointments and request inside delivery only when essential to avoid extra accessorial fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC identification minimizes reclasses and inspection delays for fragile lab glass.
- Protective boxing dramatically lowers OS&D claims and replacement costs for prepared slide sets.
- Compact, box-packed freight improves cube efficiency, helping secure better LTL rates.
- Non-hazardous designation simplifies quotes and reduces compliance-related handling time.
