How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the commodity fits NMFC 89230 (barley, corn, rice including rough rice, oats, wheat, malt, grits, or grain feed NOI) and is not prepared animal, fish, or poultry feed per Note item 89231.
- Use heavy-duty, food-grade corrugated boxes with liners to prevent sifting and moisture ingress; close with reinforced tape or staples and avoid void space to reduce crushing.
- Palletize boxes on 48x40 GMA pallets, interlock the pattern, add corner boards and a top cap, then strap and shrink-wrap; keep zero overhang and balance weight evenly.
- On the BOL, declare the exact commodity (e.g., Barley or Rough Rice), list “NMFC 89230, Class 65, Non-Hazardous,” include box count, pallet count, and full dimensions for accurate LTL rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 gives predictable rating and often lower LTL costs than higher classes for dry agricultural goods.
- One code covers multiple grains and grain products, simplifying SKU mapping, rate quotes, and training for shipping teams.
- Non-hazardous status reduces compliance overhead, limits carrier restrictions, and helps avoid hazmat surcharges.
- Clear identification as NMFC 89230 lowers reclass risk, speeding throughput and reducing adjustment fees and claim exposure.
