How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect each metal marker from abrasion: wrap in VCI paper or poly, add foam or corrugated dividers, and use edge guards so inscriptions or finishes don’t scuff.
- Choose sturdy packaging: heavy-duty boxes or wood crates for sets; fiber or steel drums for bulk small pieces. Fill voids and block/bracing to stop movement.
- Palletize for LTL: center weight on the pallet, band and stretch-wrap, and label all sides. Mark “Metal Grave Markers—Not Monuments” to prevent reclass.
- List on the BOL as “NMFC 90060, Class 77.5, metal grave markers (see Note 90062).” Keep shipment counts by container type (boxes/crates/drums) for accurate receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 77.5 streamlines quoting and reduces density disputes for cemetery suppliers, municipal buyers, and memorial installers.
- Lower reclass risk: clear “not monuments nor gravestones” designation helps avoid upcharges often tied to heavier stone memorial categories.
- Damage reduction: crate or drum options enable tighter blocking and corrosion control, cutting claim rates and replacement costs.
- Faster compliance: non-hazardous status and simple NMFC reference speed audits, accelerating pickups and improving on-time delivery metrics.
