Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
90100.00 GRAVEL OR STONE GROUP: Articles consist of gravel, sand, slag, slate or stone, as described in items subject to this grouping.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify the exact material and packaging before quoting (e.g., bagged sand on pallets, slate in crates, slag in super sacks) and select the matching sub-item, not the group header.
  2. Use palletized, shrink-wrapped bags or lined totes to control shifting and moisture; wet aggregates add weight and can trigger reweighs.
  3. Distribute weight evenly across pallets and trailers; keep stacks low and stable, and request a forklift or dock service instead of a liftgate for heavy pallets.
  4. Mark the BOL with the commodity name and packaging (e.g., “gravel, 50-lb bags on 48x40 pallet”) and verify the carrier accepts the packaging type for LTL.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate sub-item selection reduces reclass charges and billing disputes common with heavy, high-density aggregates.
  • Right packaging (totes, bags, crates) limits damage, keeps product contained, and minimizes cleanup costs if ruptures occur.
  • Mode optimization—LTL for bagged/toted product, truckload/dump for bulk—aligns cost with handling requirements and lane density.
  • Clear commodity labeling and consistent pallet specs speed dock processing and cut detention by simplifying handling.
