How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Determine density for each boxed product. Weigh the filled box, subtract tare, measure internal volume in cubic feet, then lbs ÷ ft³; higher pcf usually lowers the class within 50–400.
- Use rugged packaging for abrasives and powders. Double‑wall corrugated boxes with poly liners control dust for talc or wollastonite and resist edge crush for crushed stone.
- Palletize for stability. Keep boxes square, interlock layers on 40×48 pallets, add corner boards, and stretch‑wrap; cap with a top sheet to keep fines off other freight.
- Describe the mineral precisely on the BOL (e.g., “Sand, NOI, boxed” or “Talc, ground, boxed”) and include NMFC 90150 and calculated density; this density item is subject to Item 170.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize freight spend with density-based classes. Right-sizing box volume to boost pcf can move shipments to lower classes and cut LTL rates significantly.
- One NMFC covers many minerals. Ship gravel, sand, slag, stone, talc, soapstone, and wollastonite under a single item, simplifying quoting and compliance across plants.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options. Fewer restrictions and surcharges mean faster tendering and better network coverage.
- Cleaner claims profile. Sturdy boxed packaging reduces spills and abrasion damage, minimizing reclass fees, cleanup charges, and delivery delays.
