How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density per Item 170. Example: a full 55‑gallon drum at 420 lb is about 7.35 cu ft, ~57 pcf—use that density band to select the class.
- Match packaging to product state: liquids in tight‑head drums or pails with gaskets; hydrogenated/solid grease in lined boxes, crates, or drums; lanolin commonly in pails or drums.
- Palletize for containment. Use drum rings or banding, absorbent pads or spill trays, corner boards, and clear “Inedible Grease” and “This Side Up” labels to prevent mess and accessorials.
- Note special traits: lanolin and degras can firm up in the cold—request freeze‑protect or note “Warm to pump” when needed. For Grease, NOI, review Note, Item 90851 for exceptions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Leverage density-based rating to cut costs: consolidating into full drums or dense lined boxes can drop the class and lower LTL rates significantly.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and avoids HazMat surcharges, simplifying booking and documentation.
- Right packaging (liners, tight-head drums, crate support) reduces leakage claims and cleanup fees, protecting margins and customer relationships.
- Accurate NMFC declaration under Item 90850, with clear “inedible” wording, prevents reclass and food-grade handling charges, keeping transit smooth.
