How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect each barrel with an oil wrap and end caps, then use a double-wall corrugated box with foam or partitions so the barrel can’t roll or punch through.
- For multiple barrels, sleeve each piece and use a master carton; keep lengths under common LTL overlength triggers (about 96–108 in) when possible to avoid fees.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 91720, Class 100, packaging “boxes,” and non-hazardous. Don’t mix crates or tubes in the same shipment, and confirm carrier rules for firearm components.
- Palletize long cartons flat on a 48x96 when needed, strap and stretch-wrap, and add orientation arrows and ‘Do Not Fork Here’ notes to protect crowns and threads.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 means predictable rating with no density math, speeding quotes and reducing reclass disputes.
- Boxed presentation improves carrier acceptance and lowers damage claims on precision steel components.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges, training, and paperwork.
- Thoughtful packaging can limit overlength and special handling fees, improving landed costs and margins.
