How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure per Item 170: weigh the sealed box and use outside length, width, and height to compute density. Example: 20 lb in 3.0 cu ft ≈ 6.7 pcf.
- Match packing to the item: support brims and visors, pad football helmet face guards, and use tissue or air cells so feather plumes don’t crush.
- For wire hat frames and cap peaks, cap sharp ends and add corrugated liners to prevent box punctures that can trigger reclass or damage claims.
- Keep it boxed and labeled: use rigid cartons, avoid voids, stack light-on-top, and note contents as non-hazardous millinery/helmets for faster inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density entry places freight in the correct 50–400 class, reducing costly carrier reclass fees and billing disputes.
- Right-size cartons to raise pcf and unlock lower freight classes, directly improving LTL rate quotes for seasonal and bulk millinery moves.
- Protective packing for delicate plumes and helmet face guards cuts OS&D claims, preserving margins for boutiques, teams, and costume houses.
- Clear NMFC mapping across diverse items—feathers, frames, football and safety helmets—speeds quoting and shortens transit exceptions.
