How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 98520 and Class 65 on the BOL, and note “containing solid fuel.” Select packaging type as loose or packaged to match how the heaters are tendered.
- Palletize when possible: place concrete heaters upright on a skid, add corner/edge protectors, interleave corrugated pads, then stretch-wrap and band to prevent chipping.
- For loose pieces in a trailer, block and brace to stop rolling or tipping, cap or bag the fuel chamber, and apply “Do Not Stack” or top-load only labels to avoid cracking.
- Keep fuel residue contained: line cartons or wrap units to trap dust and odor, and separate from foodstuffs or absorbent cargo to prevent cross-contamination.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 minimizes reclass risk and stabilizes LTL rates for seasonal orchard and farm shipments.
- Non-hazardous status avoids HazMat surcharges and simplifies carrier acceptance and documentation.
- Option to ship loose or packaged provides flexibility for field deliveries while allowing cost savings with pallet consolidation.
- Clear NMFC mapping (98520) speeds quotes and strengthens claim defensibility when protecting brittle concrete parts.
